DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic Acid, and is known to be the ëgenetic templateí of our cells. It defines many physical characteristics of the human body, from skin color, to height, finger length, whether your hair is curly or straight, and whether or not you will lose that hair to baldness when you get older. Along with the advances in DNA comes the ability to compare one DNA sample to another to see if they have similarities. This ability is not only useful for crime scene investigations, but also for genealogy research. It allows you & another person to see if you both have DNA from a common ancestor, or ancestry DNA if you will.

How Ancestry DNA Tests WorkUsually these tests are performed on two different families that have the same surname, but with no obvious common ancestor. Only males can be used since the section of ancestry DNA that is passed on to descendants is found in the Y chromosome. One or more males (more than one from each family is preferable as it allows for more comparisons) are chosen from each of the families and a DNA sample is taken from each of them. Obtaining a sample for an ancestry DNA comparison sounds scary, but you only need to rub a swab in your mouth, place it in a preservative liquid, and send it to a DNA laboratory for testing.
